Mission & History
Mission

MoFi’s mission is to provide financing and consulting services that transform the lives of individuals and strengthen communities.

History

Since 1986, MoFi has worked to help small business owners in Montana. We started as a project of Women’s Opportunity and Resource Development (WORD), a nonprofit formed to improve the lives of poor women in the Missoula area. The project eventually became Women’s Economic Development Group (called WEDGo) and focused on entrepreneurial training that could raise women’s economic status.

In 1988, WEDGo helped found the Missoula Community Business Incubator (MCBI) so that both men and women in the area could receive community-based entrepreneurial training. WEDGo and MCBI mingled programs and grants from that time forward, and eventually became Montana CDC.

In 1989, the Western Montana Small Business Development Center was opened at Montana CDC to provide business consulting to the region. Financing was added in 1990, and in 1996, Montana CDC became one of the first Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) in the country to be certified by the U.S. Treasury.

Montana CDC’s powerful New Markets Tax Credits Program was established in 2008 and created new partnerships with bankers, businesses, and local development organizations throughout the region.

Over the last two years, we expanded our scope to include affordable housing solutions. Our first project was a Resident Owned Community (ROC) loan to a manufactured housing community in Missoula, Montana. Owning the property gives the residents, who form a co-op to make the purchase, long-term stability as well as control over rent and property maintenance. In 2017, we launched HomeNow, a down payment assistance program designed to help increase access to home ownership.

Today, we are known as MoFi and provide financing and consulting to entrepreneurs and small business owners across the Northern Rockies, as well as affordable housing solutions in both states. We continue to expand our services where needed, while staying true to our mission of transforming lives and strengthening community prosperity.
